Traversing mechanism for clothing flammability test

Public

The goal of this project was to design and build an apparatus to transport an instrumented mannequin through a modified American Society for Testing Methods (ASTM) Standard Room. This room is equipped to conduct an improved, full-scale garment flammability test. A system was designed to meet all design parameters, such as fire exposure conditions, speed and stability of the mannequin, and the safety of the operator. The apparatus was then constructed and subsequently tested in the modified ASTM Room.
