Boot Insole-Based Triboelectric Power Generation in Military Applications

Public Deposited

In collaboration with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Soldier Center, our team aims to develop power generation in military equipment through the use of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Triboelectric energy is a form of energy harvesting that converts mechanical energy from contact between two dissimilar materials into electrical energy. In this project, TENGs are engineered into the insoles of military boots to capture unused energy generated while walking. A printed circuit board containing a rectification circuit is used to capture the power. Screen printed conductive traces bridge the connection between the insole and printed circuit to offer flexibility and comfortability within the boot. Multiple TENG prototypes were constructed to allow for testing and analysis. Our team used this data to further develop the components and perform additional testing, culminating in a final prototype that can potentially be used for energy harvesting in military applications.
