Safety and Carrying Capacity by Island

open in viewerThis project, sponsored by Professor Dario Bertocchi, researched the infrastructure of the historic city of Venice to create a well-defensible upper limit for the number of tourists the city can safely accommodate. All exits out of the city, as well as internal bottlenecks, were identified using graph theory and isochrone walking distances, and were evaluated using a European stadium evacuation standard to establish a range for the limit of tourists based on expected crowding level during a city-wide evacuation, with the upper end being where panic and stampedes are all but guaranteed. Based on this range, a recommended feasible upper limit was proposed, along with recommendations on how to implement it.
