Designing a Low-Profile Home Speaker Utilizing a Moving Magnet Transducer

open in viewerThe objective of this Major Qualifying Project (MQP) was to design, fabricate, test, and iterate a low-profile home speaker that utilizes a moving magnet transducer, speaker cones, and passive radiators. The existing hardware from the previous work on this project was evaluated for ideation of improvements that could be implemented. The first step was to design and fabricate a testing apparatus for the motor so that testing on the previous model could be completed. From there, more iterations were designed, fabricated, and tested to improve the strength and sound quality of the motor and its components. Eventually, the motor was inserted into the box itself, which had also undergone alterations to its silicone cones. Multiple tests were completed utilizing ANSYS software modules, a handmade strain gauge, and a vibrometer. In the end, a physical model was assembled, and details of improvements for next year were explained.
