The Design of a multiple twist knot machine

This project involves the design of a multiple twist knot machine for Anderson Products Company. Currently, Anderson Products uses a servomotor and ballscrew machine to perform wire twisting for the manufacture of wire brushes. The process to manufacture one brush involves eight individual feed and twist operations. The goal is to design a new machine capable of twisting four sets of wires simultaneously. The use of a motor, ballscrew and ballnut will provide both rotational and linear motion. There are many ways to provide the power to do the work of twisting, and they include pneumatics, hydraulics and electric motors. All of these alternatives are being researched. The torque required to twist the wires is being evaluated and a preliminary design has been conceived. A prototype will be made and the design verified using an electric motor. Once these steps are complete a full design analysis will commence and a new machine assembled.
