Adding rationale capture to a solid modeler CAD tool

Public

Designers have found it desirable to document every possible idea, decision, evaluation, and claim about their design during its creation process. When this rationale is documented, designers can look back and follow the rationale behind certain decisions and why those decisions were made over others. However, designers are often reluctant to produce this level of documentation due to the substantial amount of time that would be required. This report describes the design and implementation of a system for capturing design rationale from a designer who is using CADKEY Corporation's CADKEY 98. This system acquires the rationale by asking the user to enter text or choose menu options. The rationale capture system is implemented using the Visual C++ programming environment and the CADKEY Software Development Kit.
