Variable Planar Inductor
Public DepositedDownloadable Content
open in viewerThe purpose of this Major Qualifying Project was to understand the relationship between core airgap length and inductance. This knowledge was used to create a tunable inductor that operates similarly to a potentiometer. This inductor could be integrated into real world applications, such as filters and DC-DC power converters. It allows the capability to adjust inductance values without replacing the inductor. The team modeled and built a five-layer tunable planar inductor to test this concept. The process started with research into planar inductors and their applications. The team then modeled and simulated 3-D single and multi-layer inductors using Ansys Maxwell. Finally, the team designed and fabricated multiple printed circuit board (PCB) planar inductors and tested them through multiple procedures in a lab setting.
