Low Temperature Electrolysis of Mixed Metal Oxides

open in viewerThis project tested the synthesis of mixed metal oxides and the reduction of those oxides to metal alloy powders via Low Temperature Electrolysis (LTE). Starting with the synthesis of a mixed metal oxide via Evaporative Decomposition of Solutions (EDS), a number of solutions were tested for use as the electrolyte in the electrolytic cell. Multiple trials demonstrated that the use of a 50-60 wt% sodium hydroxide solution for the electrolyte was an integral factor in the successful reduction of an oxide.
