Morphometric analysis of lumbar intervertebral discs from MRI data

Public

This MQP designed a method to morphometrically analyze magnetic resonance images of human lumbar intervertebral discs to determine a range of sizes of semi-customized Artificial Disc Replacements. The method was validated by comparing measurements of immature bovine spines taken from magnetic resonance images with measurements from physical specimens and published study data. The results indicated 86-98% accuracy of disc width and depth and 80% accuracy of disc height. Human data extraction revealed measurement accuracy of 85-99%, with the exception of posterior disc height. Ultimately, this methodology will assist in determining the range of sizes for semi-customized Artificial Disc Replacement.
