This project examined the effect of audio in a text-based video game on user experience. Participants played the game for five minutes. One-third of the participants played the game with the audio effects and text on the screen. Another third played the game with only audio, and the remaining third with only text. After playing the game, we assessed participants’ engagement, enjoyment and frustration. We also analyzed the log files of each player. In general, the inclusion of audio did not influence user experience. However, opinions of the story and audio were affected by the audio and text. Audio also influenced how quickly the game was progressed through. This study helps to reveal the role audio plays in the experience of playing a video game and potential areas for future research.
