Pratt and Whitney EB-PVD TBC's

Public

The goal of this years Pratt and Whitney/WPI Learning Factory project is to create a rules based software system that will specify the process parameters to fabricate a contoured Electron Beam Physical Vapor Deposited (EB-PVD) thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) on a PW4000 second stage turbine blade in Pratt and Whitney's coater one. This project experimentally measures the TBC coating thickness as a function of position in the coater and compares these results with theoretical predictions. Several experiments were designed and data was collected to validate/adjust the theoretical model. A database and statistical analysis tool were designed and created to aid data analysis and collection. Additional experiments were designed to investigate the affects of shadowing. Finally, the framework for a rules based software system was designed.
