The ever-increasing reliance of electronic devices that utilize AC power has increased the amount of harmonics that pollute the distribution systems. Harmonic filters are an important tool for mitigation of harmonics. Therefore, there is a need for an inexpensive and reliable way to actively filter out harmonics from an AC power line. This project demonstrates that a photovoltaic generator can be used to provide reactive power and harmonic compensation. The simulated circuits were implemented using Multi-sim, PSPICE, and PSIM. Also, reduced scale circuits were built in order to confirm the feasibility of an active filter. The results of this project showed that a photovoltaic source can be used to actively filter harmonics by compensating for reactive power.
