Two Stage Anaerobic Digestion of Orange Peels

open in viewerAbout half of the orange is discarded as waste during orange juice production. Therefore, a significant benefit could be realized by repurposing this waste. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the feasibility of two stage anaerobic digestion of orange peels for use in the orange juice industry. The reactors were fed in a semi-batch configuration. Reactor performance was evaluated based on TS and VS Reduction, COD, Ammonia, Alkalinity, and gas composition and volume. The results indicated a successful trial for the methanogenic reactor which produced a high methane and gas volume yield. However, the acidogenic reactor produced minimal hydrogen and instead exhibited alternating carbon dioxide and hydrogen spikes during the start-up period of the experiment.
