More than a billion people lack access to all weather roads, limiting their access to basic healthcare. Recent proposals to improve access to care through delivery of medical supplies via Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) do not address the necessary cold chain requirements. Preserving the cold chain requires a device that ensures supply integrity and cost savings of medical payloads. A solution was developed using simple materials and an integrated control system to actively cool and remotely monitor package contents via SMS modularized for any UAS. Validation of the 2-8 C° target was verified using WHO prequalified Vaccine Vial Monitors (VVM’s) proving the viability and efficacy of the use of UAS in cold chain supply distribution.
