Design, manufacture, and testing of a traverse winder mechanism for the Gillette company

The Gillette Company uses an extrusion process to manufacture the lubrication strip material used in the Mach III razor. This material is wound onto spools for storage until it is later used for the razor. Frequent breakage of the material, as it is unwound from the spools, caused production problems. The object of this project was to determine the cause of the problems and engineer an acceptable solution. It was determined that more accurate linear positioning and material guide systems were needed. Research was done to determine the most appropriate components for the new system. Once designed and manufactured, the new mechanism was tested on a fixture that simulated the current winding process. This testing showed improved winding performance over the current system.
