The goal of this project was to design and manufacture an integrated easel/tray system for a wheelchair bound student with cerebral palsy at the Massachusetts Hospital School. The student currently uses an easel that comprises part of the tray and is mounted on tracks on the side of the tray. This tray/easel system interferes with his view of others, takes away from tray working surface, and is only stable in one position. The new design consists of a tray and easel connected through a two-degree of freedom linkage, which provides stowage of the easel under the tray. The easel is also adjustable about the vertical and horizontal axes and translates laterally. Finally, this device provides the client with a stable surface to display materials, does not restrict view of his communication device, or his view of others.
