Gary Snyder has been called the modern day Henry David Thoreau. A comparison of their basic philosophies of Transcendentalism and Deep Ecology and an analysis of sample works of both authors reveal the essential similarities of these philosophies. Even though over 100 years separate these authors, Snyder echoes many of Thoreau's ecological views, his perception of nature as sacred, and his love of wildness and beauty in a living, evolving earth interconnected with all creatures.
