This multidisciplinary (MA/CS/RBE) project aims to address concerns surrounding in-office laryngeal laser procedures. These procedures are a safer alternative to procedures conducted in an operating room. However, during in-office laser procedures, surgeons have difficulty in determining the amount of laser exposure necessary to successfully treat harmful cells while minimally damaging surrounding healthy tissue. This results in risks such as a possible need for re-treatment or complications. In this project we study the temperature profiles of the tissue surface during the procedure and classify whether the tissue is adequately or inadequately exposed to the laser based on a characterization of the thermal responses.
