open in viewerThe purpose of this project was to develop a set of common construction materials for the Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y de Arquitectos de Costa Rica (CFIA) of San Jose, Costa Rica to help professionals in the construction sector abide by the country’s fire regulations and NFPA codes through the implementation of a database and the calculation of a cost analysis. We accomplished these by identifying both UL-compliant and non-compliant products and studying the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code. The cost analysis determined that compliant materials are 55% more expensive than non-compliant materials. This project also resulted in recommendations for making compliant materials more widely used through continued use and refinement of our database.
