Characterization of Biofilms using EIS Spectroscopy

open in viewerAlthough mature biofilms have been widely studied, there are relatively few studies on the initial steps in biofilm formation. Initial interactions of the bacteria with the surface have a strong influence on the characteristics of the mature film. It is hypothesized that inhibition of these initial steps may delay or prevent altogether the development of a mature biofilm. In the present work we have developed an electrically conductive polymer that bacteria will adhere to and that will allow the initial steps of biofilm formation to be monitored using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
