Design and testing of an advanced adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator

Public

The Cryogenics Group at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is developing an Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerator (ADR) to provide continuous cooling at 50 millikelvin. The components of the ADR our team studied were thermal switches, salt pills, superconducting magnets, and magnetic shielding. We researched materials and designs for these components. Designs for a new superconducting thermal switch and a 4-stage ADR were produced and found to withstand normal loading conditions and to be efficient at limiting parasitic heat losses.
