Acadia National Park faces a uniquely difficult task of combating entrance fee noncompliance due to its porous borders and massive scale. Our project’s overall goal was to develop an understanding of the unique issues of entrance fee compliance at Acadia National Park. During peak season we observed cars at seven different parking areas, performed interviews, and surveyed 373 visitors. Our research showed an overall compliance rate of 82.43% and that visitors lack an understanding of what funding goes to, how much of it comes from the entrance fees, and where they can purchase passes. We determined that updating the signs could increase compliance and recommend further research into other solutions such as automated park pass dispensers, QR code gates, and toll booth relocation.
