The Influence of Mobile Applications on Visitor Decision-Making in Acadia National Park

open in viewerMobile phones have gone beyond their initial intentions as communication devices and now serve as a source of information and recreational use. In 2016, the National Park Service released a Call to Action that mentions an increased focus on integrating mobile applications into the park experience. This paper focuses on how visitors in Acadia National Park use mobile applications and how popular apps may influence their decision-making. Most visitors use mobile applications spontaneously to compensate for a lack of knowledge. Additionally, many visitors do not know about the National Park Service App, so we recommend increasing advertising in the park and online, as well as improving the National Park Service App for easier and more intuitive use.
