In situ production of ceramic reinforcement in metallic parts

The purpose of this MQP is to examine the feasibility of using aluminum alkoxides to produce in situ AlO fibers in an aluminum alloy casting. Various physical forms of the alkoxide such as powder and gel have been combined to produce a paste that can be extruded. The thermal degradation characteristics of the extruded fiber have been studied. X-ray diffraction has been used to study the structure of the residue produced after degradation of the organometallic. The results indicate that temperatures greater than 850?C results in crystalline AlO. The organometallic fibers can be embedded in Styrofoam patterns to produce in situ ceramic fibers in the metallic part via the lost foam process.
