Utilizing GAC and MIEX to Improve TOC Removal from Wastewater for Discharge to Groundwater near Drinking Water Sources

open in viewerThe goal of this project was to design an advanced wastewater treatment process that reduces TOC to 1 mg/L to comply with groundwater discharge regulations for Zone II or IWPA. Samples from the Westford-Acton facility simulated a site required to comply with these regulations. Alternatives were determined based on wastewater characteristics and literature research. The treatment utilized an ultrafiltration membrane bioreactor, which caused all organics in the effluent to be dissolved. Dissolved organic carbon removal was tested at the bench scale using Hydrodarco 4000 GAC, MIEX® resin, and GAC and MIEX® in series. A full-scale design using MIEX® and GAC in series and recommendations for further testing using MIEX® and GAC are provided at the conclusion of this report.
