Promoting Qom Artisan Baskets in the United States

open in viewerThe Qom are a group of impoverished Indigenous people who live in Cerrito, Paraguay. Some of the Qom women are artisans who weave baskets and sell them in order to bring in much needed income for their families. The objective of the project was to create a business and marketing plan for the exportation and sale of these baskets in the United States, in collaboration with Fundación Paraguaya. The team researched, interviewed, and collaborated with retailers to make the plans. It was determined that selling the baskets in the United States would bring the artisans minimum wage, which is often unattainable for Indigenous people in Paraguay. The team recommends that Fundación Paraguaya sell the Qom baskets in the United States, and implement the business and marketing plans.
