Phase Change Energy Storage Implementing Recycled Materials

open in viewerThis project involved the development and design of a hybrid thermal energy storage using paraffin as phase-change material. Thermal storage is achieved in the form of latent heat of paraffin primarily using solar energy that is collected during peak solar energy periods. Phase change materials, such as paraffin are chosen due to their high energy density across small temperature increments. The P-116 wax utilized in this design also helps recycling of this abundant material that is used in candle making and food industry. The project involves evaluation of thermal characterization of PCM as well as dynamic simulation of thermal response for operation of a complete system.
