Chemical Milling and the Removal of Alpha Case

open in viewerWyman-Gordon is currently attempting to more accurately measure metal removal rates of chemically milled pieces, optimize acid bath life, and determine any trends between the two. Accurately determining metal removal rates would result in a more efficient and less time consuming chemical milling process. Based on results, it was determined that alpha case plus the titanium alloy is removed during chemical milling. An optimized and more efficient bath would lead to less waste acid, thereby reducing environmental impacts, and enhanced production quality potentially resulting in increased revenue and decreased process costs.
