open in viewerSustainability incorporates three pillars: society, environment, and economy. These considerations together encapsulated the present needs of a community and plans for the future. These sustainability pillars were applied to a bio-construction initiative in the Andean community of San Rafael, Ecuador. Our goal was to cooperate with the Azuay Prefecture, San Rafael administration, and community members to contribute to sustainable bio-construction designs that are locally appropriate to the parish of San Rafael. We incorporated a human-centered design approach to this project to ensure desirability, feasibility, and viability of our materials assessment. In this way, we assessed materials with regards to societal importance and presented simple sustainable bioconstruction designs.
