Recommending Measures for Preventing and Responding to Lithium-ion Battery Fires at Sea

open in viewerOur project’s goal was to advise the United States Coast Guard in drafting policy and best practices for preventing and mitigating lithium-ion battery fires onboard passenger vessels and roll-on-roll-off carriers. We first reviewed existing regulations and interviewed experts in fire protection, vessel compliance, marine safety, and hazardous materials. We then documented fire prevention and protection methods. Finally, we considered the feasibility of our recommendations and the ability to enforce relevant policies. We found that prevention and early detection are the best solutions. Recommendations include policy modifications, raising awareness of safety concerns and precautions, adding specific detection and sprinkler systems, and testing the effectiveness of extinguishing agents.
