ROAMing geometry and portal rendering

Rendering of complex geometry at interactive frame rates presents a major challenge to programmers and designers of 3D systems. We present a new hybrid approach to dynamic, view-dependent level of detail, combining ROAM-style triangulation generalized for arbitrary geometry and portal-based dynamic visibility calculation. Our approach provides real-time 3D applications with direct control over triangle counts when viewing arbitrarily complex scenes. We also describe the design, implementation, and testing of a prototype 3D engine that uses our approach.
