Environmental Assessment of Chemical Incidents

open in viewerThe goal of this project, conducted for El Cuerpo de Bomberos, the national fire department of Costa Rica, was to promote understanding and responsibility for the effects that chemical disasters have on the environment. We created TEEICI, Tool for Evaluating the Environmental Impact of Chemical Incidents, to quantify the environmental damage done by hazardous materials. The program is to be used for communicating to the Environmental Tribunal of Costa Rica the extent of the environmental impact caused by polluters. During our studies of many chemical disasters, we also formulated recommendations that would reduce the frequency of chemical incidents and better improve emergency response.
