In Sub-Saharan Africa, one of every five people still practices open defecation. This is due to the lack of sanitary waste disposal methods in rural areas. The Global Sustainable Aid Project has been trying to lower the rates of open defecation by implementing its Microflush vermicomposting toilets since 2009. Today there are thousands of these toilets in 21 countries worldwide, but as these toilets age, it is important to ensure that their technology is sustainable and can continue serving their communities for years to come. This project details the process of designing and testing an evaluation tool to analyze GSAP Microflush vermicomposting toilets for longevity and durability.
