Fluid flow modeling in a Stirling engine using the ultra HI-FI method

Public

Current Stirling engine fluid-flow simulation is limited to one-dimensional analysis using commercially available CFD software, most of which uses SIMPLE and PISO methods to solve fluid problems numerically. These methods employ algorithms that correct pressure terms in the Navier-Stokes Equations by iteration and use them to solve the continuity equation. Although popular among CFD solvers for the past 20 years, SIMPLE and PISO are low-order methods and are susceptible to truncation errors inherent in the methods. The use of higher-order methods can minimize the numerical losses experienced by the SIMPLE and PISO methods. Dyson's Ultra Hermite Integration, Flux, and Interpolation (Ultra HI-FI or UHF) method is a finite volume method of higher-order that has been applied to the two-dimensional non-linear Euler equations as well as the linear viscous Burger's equation. This project applied the UHF method to the one-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and benchmarked the program with a one-dimension heat transfer problem. UHF method results were compared to SIMPLE method results and found to increase in accuracy as the order increased.
