Supporting Performing Arts with Maker Spaces at the Santa Fe Indian School

Public Deposited

Our project goal was to develop plans for the creation of a performing arts makerspace and a preliminary performing arts design curriculum at the Santa Fe Indian School (SFIS). We achieved these goals by determining best practices in makerspace design, and with respect to curricula development, understanding how performing arts could be inspired by Indigenous culture. Using SFIS’s expectations regarding the makerspace and performing arts design curriculum, we created a list of recommendations. Our research found that safety, storage, and equipment are essential elements to performing arts makerspaces. Additionally, for the performing arts curriculum, we recommend SFIS prioritize students’ interests and provide external opportunities and connections in the New Mexico film industry.
