The history and culture of Hong Kong have a distinct connection to its waterfronts. While most waterfronts are attractive to visitors, there is a scarcity of infrastructure to promote social connection in these spaces. To investigate their community uses, we observed and documented people’s static and moving behaviors at seven waterfronts across Hong Kong. Using principles of urban design, redevelopment strategies, and our observational study, we recommend that waterfronts are improved to better promote human connections. The suggested features will enhance the social environment made possible by waterfront promenades across Hong Kong.
