Statistical Variability and Thermal Stability of Photonic Integrated Circuits
ÖffentlichPhotonic integrated circuits (PICs) are catalyzing the next technical revolution and need to be better understood prior to commercialization. Consequently, a partnership between LEAP@WPI/QCC and Spark Photonics was formed to establish procedures for the testing and characterization of PICs with a Maple Leaf Photonics optical probe station. This paper details how two identical AIM/Spark PICs were tested and characterized. Detailed analyses of six small microring resonators (MRRs) indicated statistical invariability regarding their defining characteristics. However, prevalent, undesirable resonant mode splitting was observed. Additionally, a thermal stability analysis of one small MRR revealed no thermal hysteresis effects for operating temperatures between 25 °C and 45 °C.
