Boat monitoring of Venetian canals

Public

The walls of Venetian canals are weakening due to excessive boat traffic and the forces of the wake waves caused by these boats. The force of the waves is drawing mortar from between the bricks and causing giant voids in the substructure of the city. The goal of this project in conjunction with another WPI team is to develop a method of monitoring boat traffic and recording information including time and date of boat passing, speed, and force exerted on the wall from the wake. The success of the project will lead to the implementation of systems throughout the city. The acquisition of the data will help the city to determine causes of the wall destruction and implementation of laws governing canal traffic.
