open in viewerDespite increasing calls to improve athletic safety, only the most popular sports (e.g. American football) have seen significant progress. This project implements Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices on a bicycle helmet to collect critical data for assessing sustained head trauma. The team employed a three-axis accelerometer as well as force-sensitive resistors on an off-the-shelf Bontrager Rally WaveCel helmet to determine the G-force of impacts and pinpoint their location. The teams’ findings emphasize the pressing need for additional research in the athletic safety technology industry with respect to cycling.
