Calibration of a light box to simulate the coating process of a PW400 second stage blade

Public

A light box was created and calibrated to simulate the coating process of a PW4000 second-stage blade that is carried out at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Conn. This light box was created based on research done by William Weir in his thesis "Development of a Rule-based Software System for the Fabrication of a Contoured EB- PVD TBC on a PW4000 Second-Stage Blade," completed in October 2002. The following goals were established in the beginning of this research and have been accomplished. First, a tab array was created to calibrate three different types of light sensors by relating light intensity to coating thickness and showing the correlation between the coater lab array and the Light Box stationary parallel plane receiver. From these calibrations the most effective sensor to simulate the coating process was chosen. Second, the Light Box was set up so that the light sensors could be used to represent the theoretical thickness of the TBC on the turbine blade.
