The genre of transformative fiction--works of literature that utilize concrete elements from a source text to engage with the source’s themes--is one that has seen little attention. In this project, I investigate the creative process behind transformative works by analyzing the different types of transformations, what elements of their source texts they do or do not alter, and some commonly occurring transformative themes. I also present a set of three original transformative works, based on Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado”, and detail what I learned about transformation during the process of creation.
