Forging Techniques in Ancient Cultures

open in viewerThis report attempts to trace the technology of sword making in the Japanese and European cultures. It covers the interactions of society, religion and warfare as they relate to the art of sword making. The Japanese sword smiths developed long-standing processes, guided by their mysticism, that resulted in a remarkable weapon. - The European smiths, in contrast, evolved their swords through experiment and innovation, with little regard for mystic underpinnings, yet ultimately produced a blade very similar in quality.
