Stress-Dependent Cilia Remodeling in C. elegans
Public DepositedPrimary cilia are sensory organelles that act as signaling hubs found on the surface of most cells in vertebrates. The goal of this project was to use C. elegans as a model to study the mechanisms by which cilia respond to physiological stress. C. elegans were subjected to heat and cold-stress assays, and their ciliated neurons were imaged to examine stress response. Primary cilia exhibited shortening in response to both heat and cold shock. Understanding the mechanisms by which cilia respond to stress may allow researchers to reverse adverse effects of environmental stress on ciliary signaling and associated disorders.
