Optimization of the continuous rheoconversion process reactor

The continuous rheoconversion process, developed at WPI, is a means of producing semi-solid metal slurry 'on-demand' for SSM rheocasting. Through laboratory studies and industrial beta trials of the CRP reactor, obstacles to the use of the reactor in an industrial rheocasting operation were identified. ANSYS code was used to develop thermal finite element models of the reactor, in order to optimize the cooling channel configuration. Fluent code was used to explore the fundamental fluid flow phenomena in the CRP reactor. An optimized reactor design is proposed as a result of these analyses, along with recommendations for future work which could further improve and optimize the reactor for industrial use.
