Optimization of a circularly polarized single-feed patch antenna on a nano-satellite platform

A study was made to design a single-feed, single-band circularly polarized patch antenna at 437 MHz mounted on a metal platform (nano-satellite). ANSOFT HFSS v.9.0 software is chosen as a design and optimization tool. Antenna beamwidth, axial ratio, and return loss are subject of optimization, to meet the required specifications. As a result of this study, the antenna shape, size, location, as well as the dielectric substrate parameters are determined. Optimized antenna design was assembled and tested. Experimental results were conducted at Hanscom Air force Base at Ipswitch. Theoretical and experimental antenna design meets the project specifications. The outcome of the study will be used in the design of the satellite antenna for the PANSAT program. the results were also presented at the 20th Annual Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (ACES) [Conference].
