Gompei's Lab Grown Leather
PúblicoContenido Descargable
open in viewerThe current leather making process poses a detriment to society given the vast amount of waste and excess harmful chemicals that are produced from the process. The goal of this project is to transform the current process and diminish the negative effects associated with it. The solution is to grow leather within a laboratory through the establishment of a device capable of cell seeding on a plant scaffold while additionally allowing for the perfusion of media. The design team aimed to understand the dynamics of growing bovine dermis and its mechanical properties well enough to produce a device capable of growing a sheet of lab-grown leather. The results of the device were compared to the current leather making process.
