Design of a tow tank facility

Public

The objective of this MQP was to design and construct a tow tank. The tow tank involves moving an object smoothly through water according to various motion profiles. A motion analysis was conducted based on maximum speed (40 in/sec (1 m/sec)) and maximum acceleration (300 in/sec2 (7.6 m/sec2)) requirements. From the investigation of various linear motion technologies, a belt drive mechanism was designed and modified by the team using force, power, torque, and vibration analyses. The final system consists of two parallel belt drives connected to a tracked carriage that holds the towing platform.
