Low Profile Home Speaker

open in viewerThe objective of this Major Qualifying Project (MQP) was to build upon the previous work of a low-profile home speaker and develop a driving circuit to demonstrate the functionality of the speaker. Using 3D printing, the mechanical system design was completed for a magnetic motor to be placed inside an enclosure to produce adequate vibration through the speaker’s cones. After many iterations of adjusting the enclosure, cones, and motor, the final design was produced and followed by both physical and software testing including ANSYS static structural analysis. Concurrently, a class-D audio amplifier was decided to be an appropriate driver for the speaker. Using rapid prototyping methodology, multiple iterations of the class-D amplifier were simulated and then finally built into hardware. Following testing of the speaker and class-D amplifier, recommendations and designs were proposed to be implemented in future developments of this project.
