Common Loon Eggshell Porosity & Thickness in North America

open in viewerThe goal of the project was to examine differences between eggshell characteristics of COLO populations throughout the US. We measured thickness, water vapor conductance, and pore density of eggshells from the Northeast, Midwest, and Northwest regions. Measurements were compared to determine whether eggshell characteristics vary between genetically distinct populations. The data suggests that there is no significant difference between water vapor conductance and thickness of eggshells from the three regions. Although the data indicated a statistically significant difference between the pore densities of eggshells collected from the three regions studied, many limitations were encountered during this study. Based on our study, we recommend further experimentation to validate our findings.
