The characterization of the metallography of aerospace alloys having undergone electrical discharge machining

The process of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) of aerospace alloys introduces changes in the surface structure of the metals leading to an increased susceptibility to corrosion. An understanding of the altered surface layer must be established to counter properly the negative effects this layer has on a finished product. By compiling photographic characterizations of the surface metallography after EDM, a baseline for investigation into the cause and the removal of the altered surface has been established. Visual examination in cross-section of the EDM surface microstructure afforded direct measurements of the "detrimental zone" resulting from this machining process. The data obtained from the Polaroid images will allow designers to calculate for removal depth of this zone while retaining precise workpiece tolerances.
